I’m very excited about my final project for Motion Graphic. It’s going to be a
continuous flow of still images. All black and white but one focal point with one color.
It’s going to illustrate a poem that I wrote about the conflicting two meanings of
colors. The style will be somewhat similar to the PSYOP project that I posted.
One song that’s about 1:40 long will be posted to play in the background.
It’s going to be challenging, but I look forward to it.
1. Space and Composition
The space is completely filled all the time. It is a constant flow of photographs. The focus point of the composition is made by the color blue. While everything else is black and white, the viewer’s eyes are directed to the color blue all the time.
2. Image and Image Type
Images are used to emphasize a certain color that Adidas is advertising, which is blue. All different kinds of images are used in this piece. Photographs of different urban scenes and objects are shown to demonstrate the environment that we encounter everyday. They are trying to show that the color blue is everywhere we go.
3. Symbols and Symbol types
Color is the biggest symbol in this piece. It is the main subject of the project. The color blue is implied to many different objects, or symbols to show the versatility of the color.
4. Time
The time of the piece is the same as the track of song is being played. When the song slows down or the lyrics slow down, the transition slows down also to synchronize with the music.
5. Sound
The sound is a very important indicator of this project. The word, “blue”, is repeated continuously to emphasize the purpose of this piece, which is to advertise the new color used in Adidas.
6. Intent
Intent of this project is to advertise the new color being used in Adidas.
7. Meaning
The advertisement shows that the “blue” adidas is using is different from any other blue.
I chose to look at works from a company called Psyop because of few reasons. First, their name drew my attention. Psyop, which is short for Psychological Operation, is the department that I serve in the United States Army. Since the company and I have something in common, I decided to check it out. Second, I remember from week 6 notes that Psyop is the king of the genre, “flow”. I remember the description for the genre saying, “animation that flows smoothly from shot to shot, from design frame to design frame,” I imagined continuous flow of still-graphics, which I really love.
As I mentioned above, Psyop does a great job of making fluid motion graphics. Although, not all their works are fluid, they do an awesome job coordinating one track of song into a constant flow of still-graphics.
1. Structures and Composition
You have to love this video. This is one of my favorite music videos of all times. Composition is simple yet very effective in grabbing the viewers’ attention. While following the two guys in the video, the camera has its focus on center, which is the t-shirt of the two guys, all the time. Everything happens in the black t-shirt of those two guys.
2. Image and Image Type
The video uses tons of images and typography. All the images and typography are used to describe the lyrics of the song. In some parts of the video, typography is used to spell out the lyrics. The feel of the music is well delivered through the comical and colorful use of images and typography.
3. Symbols and Symbol types
Many symbols are used in this video. Among many things, color is probably the strongest. The bright saturated colors of this video definitely give a vibrant energy to this motion graphic. Plus, the background is black and white. This effect gives the changing colors more energy. Symbolic images are used to demonstrate the lyrics. I like the use of pyramid for the word “mystery”. In one part, they slice the heads of Beethoven and Washington, and replace those with funny images to show how they want to replace boring stuff with their fun music.
4. Time
The time of this video corresponds with the length of the music. We can note that the intro and outro of the video is the same. These transitions are used to demonstrate the feeling of walking in to a “show” and then walking out of it. All though, most of the time, they use the t-shirts of the two walking guys as their canvas, sometimes, they transit to a blank black space to a canvas. In this case, images and typography is bigger to fill the composition. I think the transition from t-shirts to black space is used to help continue the viewers’ interest.
5. Sound
Since this is a music video, the only sound is the promoting song of the video, which is a great song!! The images and typography is well-linked with the music. Sound is more important than graphical elements in this video.
6. Intent
I have to say this video is designed for entertainment and promotion of the music.
7. Meaning
The message is simple. Justice’s music is AWESOME!!
For the first project of my motion Graphic class, I’ve decided to use happy-sad and harmony-chaos combinations. Smiling and crying mouths are illustrated to show the appropriate emotions. These drawings will move up and down while the scales are transforming within the comp. laughing and crying sounds will be incorporated to also demonstrate the emotions. For harmony-chaos, I will use movements. Both illustrations will march in a orderly fashion, and then it will move within the comp in a unpredictable patterns to portray chaos.
Love the use of typography in this advertisement. The contrast is great and very effective. The message is well created by its contrast.
I loved this webpage for giving me plenty of helpful tips on using successful typography. I like the way how the author describes “nothing is everything”. I have to admit. I am always afraid of white space. White space is something that gives me worries about my design. Many times, I thought, “white space might appear as laziness”. But this website taught me that when you give proper breathing space with a good use of the grid system, is will become a attractive element for your design. I also like the author’s explanation of overlapping types on images. That approach has been something that I’ve always wanted to achieve, but I was afraid that it might make my design too busy. Overall, this reference taught me how to think outside the box!!
Very nice and funny commercial. The character design really sets the humorous mood. I also love the bright colored background. The upbeat music and the bright colr at the back really goes well together. I laughed at the transition when the “movie” was being born. Very literal and funny stuff. The flow is very easy to follow even with the sound off. step-by-step story telling is very well done. Overall, highly upbeat and funny work!! love it!!
